Mattea ‘Tea’ Turenne (they/she) is a Latinx, non-binary butch lesbian mixed media artist and illustrator based in Baltimore, Maryland. In May 2024, they graduated with their BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), with a major in General Fine Arts and double minor in Book Arts and Illustration. They are most recently interested in paper conservation, interning at the National Gallery of Art’s Paper Conservation Lab as a part of the Smithsonian Latino Museum Studies Program.
Turenne’s personal artistic practice is grounded in their experience as an illustrator and delves into a wide range of mediums, including mixed media drawing, hand-papermaking, digital art, risograph printing, book binding, and more. They use flowers and natural elements as motifs for gender transformation and growth, deriving inspirations from the folk art traditions of their South American and European heritages.
